Venom Drainer is a malicious software (malware) that emerged as a significant threat in the cyber world after the closure of Monkey Drainer in March 2023. This malware, which primarily targets cryptocurrency assets, quickly became popular among former users of Monkey Drainer, amassing a substantial $27 million in stolen crypto. The rapid emergence of Venom Drainer, just a day before Monkey Drainer's announcement of closing operations, suggested a premeditated plan to replace the older group and continue its illicit activities.
Monkey Drainer had been active for six months before being exposed by digital detective agency ZackXBT. Following this exposure, most users migrated to Venom Drainer, indicating the malware's ability to attract and retain a large user base despite its illegal nature. The cybersecurity firm Scam Sniffer reported that Venom Drainer successfully pulled in a significant amount of stolen cryptocurrency during its operation.
However, the reign of Venom Drainer was short-lived, as it ceased operations in April 2023. After its closure, most of its users switched allegiance to another malware called Angel Drainer. The swift transitions between these malware groups reflect the dynamic and persistent nature of the cybercrime landscape, underlining the need for continuous vigilance and robust cybersecurity measures.
