Silverterrier is a notorious threat actor that has been involved in Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams. Our previous research into commodity Remote Access Tools (RATs) showed that these tools are popular among cybercriminals, and Silverterrier is no exception. Silverterrier has used these tools as part of their attacks and has been linked to the largest financial cybercrime threat in West Africa.
However, law enforcement efforts have been successful in prosecuting authors and customers of malware associated with Silverterrier, including Orcus, LuminosityLink, and Adwind. In May 2022, Interpol announced the arrest of the alleged leader of the Silverterrier BEC group. This is a significant milestone in the fight against cybercrime and shows that law enforcement efforts can be successful in capturing even the most notorious cybercriminals.
Overall, Silverterrier's use of commodity RATs highlights the evolving nature of cybercrime, where criminals are increasingly relying on off-the-shelf tools to carry out attacks. The arrest of the alleged leader of the Silverterrier BEC group is a positive development, but it also underscores the need for continued vigilance and collaboration between law enforcement agencies, cybersecurity researchers, and private industry to combat the ever-present threat of cybercrime.
