CVE-2022-33292 is a vulnerability in the popular open-source software Apache Tomcat. This flaw allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code remotely by sending specially crafted requests to affected servers. The vulnerability exists due to a lack of proper input validation in the implementation of the NIO2 connector in Apache Tomcat versions 10.0.0-M1 to 10.0.11, 9.0.0.M5 to 9.0.54, and 8.5.0 to 8.5.78. The vulnerability was discovered by researchers at the security firm Tencent Security Xuanwu Lab in May 2022 and publicly disclosed on June 7, 2022. Soon after the disclosure, the Apache Software Foundation released patches for the affected versions of Apache Tomcat. However, it is important to note that the vulnerability could still be exploited on unpatched servers. As with any vulnerability, organizations using Apache Tomcat are strongly encouraged to update their software immediately and implement other mitigations as necessary. Additionally, it is recommended to conduct a thorough review of any logs or network traffic to ensure that no exploitation attempts have been made on their systems.
